Phoebe is only mentioned in two short verses in the Bible, so she may easily be missed by some. However, there is always something we can learn even in the shortest of passages.

One of the things I love about Phoebe is that she was a woman of faith who served God and others diligently. She was such a great example of servant leadership that Paul refers to her as “one who is worthy of honor among God’s people”. Paul trusted her and sent her with a message to the Romans. He wanted her to be received well among them, so he made sure to introduce her, as “our sister Phoebe”, reminding them that we are a family in Christ, and she was an important member of this family. He also encouraged them to help her as she had helped many. Her work and faithfulness had not gone unnoticed, and she was blessed because of it.

When we come to Christ, we become part of His great family as well. We all possess different gifts and talents, but when we use them faithfully in our service to the Lord, others will be impacted for His glory. As part of God’s family, we are to help and support each other to further God’s work here on earth. Not in competition with one another, but rather as a compliment to one another. Realizing that we are all working towards the same goal… that others would come to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

We may not think our work is seen or important, perhaps there are no written words about us, but God sees all. You can be sure that when you serve Him with a humble and obedient heart, He takes note of it all. Our goal should not be earthly praise, but instead to be able to hear the words “Well done good and faithful servant” when we stand before the Lord one day.  

Suggested prayer: Lord, thank you for examples like Phoebe, who at first glance may simply seem like a supporting role in Paul’s story, but without her faithfulness and willingness, Paul’s ministry may have not been the same! Help me to use all that you have given me to serve You. May I be an encouragement and help to others, and them to me, as we work together for your glory. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
