Moses: A Friend of God

“The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.”1

The second most popular person in the Bible, next to Jesus, is probably Moses. It’s easy to have favorite Bible characters depending on their accomplishments or popular stories. We glamorize them as Biblical celebrities, when in reality, they were regular people just like you and me.

Although Moses was known to many as a Prince of Egypt, he was born a Hebrew, an Israelite from the tribe of Levi. His life began like many others; born into a loving family, he was the youngest of three children. However, Moses became a child star before he could even walk! We are introduced to him in Exodus, chapter 2, as he is hiding in a basket while floating down the Nile River, in hopes that his life would be spared. In a drastic turn of events, Moses was raised by the very family who had made slaves of the Hebrew nation; his family included. Raised as royalty, Moses knew privileges and at times abused them. This was the case when in a sudden fit of revenge, he killed an Egyptian for beating a fellow Hebrew. Much was his surprise when he was called out for a crime that he thought he had gotten away with. Upon hearing of Pharoah’s anger toward him, Moses chose to run away. This is where God met him. God didn’t wait for Moses to be at the height of his spiritual maturity. God sought Moses out in the midst of his fear and hiding and gave him a new identity. God had a plan for Moses that would take him far from his comfort zone.

As Moses allowed God to mold him into the leader that would be remembered throughout history, he encountered many trials and obstacles along the way. Knowing God was with him, Moses was able to lead the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt and guide them to the Promised Land. Moses spent time in God’s presence and God spoke with him. Moses had the honor of being called God’s friend (Exodus 33), and at the end of his life, God himself buried Moses in secret (Deut. 34).

Moses’ life may not have always been pleasing to the Lord, yet God turned Moses’ life around and used him for His glory in a way that few men have ever been used. Our lives might seem like an endless obstacle course, and we may sometimes feel as if we’re just floating along waiting for someone to save us, but God has a plan for each one of us and is waiting for the right moment to turn us around and use us for His glory. Allow the Lord to set His plan for you in motion. Seek a friendship with the One who gave His all for you!

Suggested Prayer:

Dear Lord, what an honor to be called your friend! There are times when I feel overwhelmed by life’s obstacles and forget that you have a plan for my life, far beyond what I can see. Give me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and be used you. Allow my life to reflect your glory and my trust in you be a testament of your friendship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
