“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant
Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may
be successful wherever you go.”1
After Moses died, the Lord chose a man
named Joshua to lead the people of Israel. Joshua had been Moses’ assistant and
had served faithfully, but he didn’t possess leadership experience. God gave
him hands on training, and a motivational speech that would set the tone for
his new journey. Being Moses’ assistant, Joshua had seen the blessings and
trials firsthand. It is no wonder that the Lord tells him to be “Strong and
courageous” three times in Joshua chapter 1, and then at the end of the
chapter, the people remind him to be strong and courageous. This leadership
role was obviously not for the faint of heart!
In addition to being strong and
courageous, the Lord reminded Joshua that his success would come as a result of
his obedience to the law of the Lord which Moses had taught him. Joshua had
learned to follow well, and that is precisely the most important quality needed
to be successful as a leader. God had called him to lead His people, and he
wanted Joshua to know that he was not alone. God was equipping him with all he
needed to handle the assignment at hand. Joshua just needed to follow the Lord.
God has placed each of us in a
leadership role in one way or another. Whether we are leaders in our home, at
work, at church, in the community, or amongst friends, we are all leading
someone. Leading others is a great responsibility, as our example and actions
can either lead them closer to God or push them away. We may feel that we are not
qualified for the job sometimes but remember that God will equip you as needed.
People who follow God and obey his commands make the best leaders.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, help my
priority be to follow you. Because as I learn to follow you and be obedient to
your Word, you are preparing me to lead others. Fill me with strength and
courage, trusting that you will equip me to do the assignments you have set before
me. Thank you that I am never alone because you are with me. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
