“Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom
the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field
he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.”1
I am an introvert, and have always
been a little shy, especially when I find myself in new situations. God knows
this about me and has always shown his faithfulness in sending encouragers my
way. Time after time I have met someone whose words or actions motivate me and
encourage me to do things I might not have done otherwise, not to mention the
great encouragement I have received during times of discouragement!
In the New Testament, we read about a
man named Joseph, who the apostles nicknamed Barnabas. What an amazing
encouragement this man must have been to receive such a meaningful name. After Saul’s
amazing transformation following his encounter with the Lord on the road to
Damascus, everyone struggled to believe that he was indeed a changed man. Acts
9:26 tells us that he tried to join the disciples, but they were afraid of him!
It was not until Barnabas, the encourager, brought him to the disciples and
introduced him that the disciples accepted him. Barnabas had obviously taken the
time to listen to Saul’s story to know the truth of all that had happened. God
then used Barnabas to encourage Saul to persevere and grow into the great
leader he became. What if Barnabas, instead of being the “son of encouragement”,
had been the “son of discouragement”? Imagine the great difference it would
have made in the ministry of many! His generosity, compassion, and encouraging
spirit was used greatly by the Lord to motivate others and to grow the Lord’s
kingdom.
Encouragement can actually be quite
simple. When we highlight the positive attributes of a person, instead of
focusing on the flaws, it may provide just what that person needs to keep going.
A note, a gift or kind gesture, or simply a kind word can do great things. Let
us not underestimate the power of encouragement. It has helped me become who I
am today, and it helped a world changer like Saul develop the ministry God had
for him.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you
for the people you have placed in my life to provide encouragement when I
needed it most. I ask that you help me be like Barnabas and be an encourager to
others as well. Let my words and actions lift others up and encourage them to
be who you want them to be. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In
Jesus’ name, Amen.
