“The wise see danger ahead and avoid it, but fools keep
going and get into trouble.”1
My family loves travelling. Whether it be taking the scenic
route to our destination just to soak in the beauty, or off-roading in the
desert to explore new places, we love it all! One thing I have always admired
is how many motorists will warn the oncoming vehicles of any dangers ahead by
flashing their headlights. Accidents, broken down vehicles in the road, or even
construction work can be a danger if they are not visible to oncoming traffic. So,
the flashing headlights from those coming from that scene, alert the drivers to
slow down and pay attention.
I have often recalled this illustration and use it to remind
myself of the importance of sharing the Good News of salvation with those who
have not yet believed. Having read God’s Word, and experienced salvation for
myself, I am aware of what the penalty of sin is. Yet, thanks to Jesus and His
sacrifice, it is a penalty that has been paid for me! This same gift is
available for all and comes with no conditions. If you can believe, you will receive.
It is as simple as that. However, there may be people around you who have never
heard of what lies ahead, or perhaps they have heard but don’t understand. This
is where we come in.
Our “headlights” should constantly be flashing to those
around us to get their attention. Through our Christ-like attitudes, and the fruits
of the Spirit on display, others are bound to notice, and their curiosity will
lead to conversation. In conversation is where we can verbally share the gospel
with others but building trust and relationship with others will be key in how
effective we will be. God did not force salvation on us, but simply made it
available to us, loved us, and leaves the choice to us. Our job is to
continuously pray for us to be effective witnesses of Christ, and for others to
be open recipients to the message that will lead them to a personal
relationship with Christ.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for those you used to
share the gospel message with me and alert me to the dangers ahead. I pray that
you would use me to do the same for others. The day of your return draws closer
every day, so help me not to misuse the time you have given me. May my goal
always be to reach one more for You! Thank you for hearing and answering my
prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
