Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

“For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.”1

Over the past few weeks we have been reading stories about the origins of many beautiful Christmas hymns. A common theme among some of them is that they were written in hope. Many of the authors who composed these meaningful songs chose to focus on the Hope that transcends all during times of personal tragedy, fear, or catastrophe. Perhaps this is the reason that these songs have become some of our favorites.

Hope truly is the center of Christmas. Jesus was the hope that came down to earth and drove out the darkness we found ourselves in. By listening to the lyrics to songs such as these, our sorrows melt into joy, our doubts turn into faith, and our worries fade as we cling to the eternal hope we find in Jesus.

“Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” was written by pastor Henry Van Dyke in 1907. It was written just before World War 1 when people were worried about the future. Pastor Van Dyke wanted them to be aware of the Presence of God, even in the midst of uncertain times. He was well aware of the reasons to be worried, but he also knew that joy could be found in all circumstances because God is love and we can rest in Him.

As Christian’s, we belong to Christ, and He holds us in the palm of His hands. We are safe, loved, and we can trust our Father through even the most difficult circumstances. As we learn to love others as God loves us, we will experience the joy of living! Let us count our blessings, find reasons to be joyful, and trust God with the rest. Let us make this song our prayer of praise today:

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day.2

Amen!
