“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord
has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the
brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released, and prisoners
will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the
Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their
enemies. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair…”1
Have you ever witnessed someone’s life be completely
transformed by God? Perhaps this has been your life. I have had the privilege
of seeing this firsthand in my dad’s life.
My dad contracted polio when he was 8 months old, which affected
both of his legs. This disability brought about challenges growing up that most
children don’t encounter. In addition to this, he was raised by a stepdad who
was extremely rigid and was not one to show acceptance or love. Once he grew
into his teenage years, my dad looked for acceptance in all the wrong places,
which led him to make many mistakes. He carried all of the hurt he had
accumulated into his marriage, which led to many years of ups and downs for him
and my mom. He tried to drown the pain of his past in alcohol, but nothing
could fill the void he felt. But then… GOD.
It may have been difficult for my dad to be convinced that
someone could love and accept him just the way he was… flaws and all. But once
he allowed Jesus in, WOW! What a journey it has been. His transformation did
not take place overnight, instead it has been a consistent road of growth over
the last 43 years. God had to heal all the hurts from the past, and my dad was
finally able to be free of all the anger and bitterness he was carrying. The
void in his heart was filled by the only One who could fill it… Jesus. God
called my dad to be a pastor 25 years ago this month, and my mom continues to
serve alongside him.
My dad’s life could have been considered “hopeless” by many
who knew him, but it has been amazing to see God’s plan for him unfold. God
took his life of “ashes” and turned it into a beautiful masterpiece! God
continues painting day by day, but if I could tell you one thing, it is that
there is hope in Jesus. Whatever your past or current circumstances, God can
turn your ashes into art as well. Let
Jesus in. He loves you and can offer what no one else can… unconditional love
and forgiveness.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for these amazing
examples of transformation when we surrender our lives and will to you. I ask
that you meet me where I am and show me that you are enough. You are all that I
need. In you I can experience abundant life. Thank you for hearing and
answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
