“So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into.”1
Recently, a friend of mine got an unexpected call in the middle of the night. The 3:00 am call that he received was from the Sheriff’s department informing him that there was a fire at his business. He was asked to go down there immediately. Thankfully, when he arrived he saw that the fire was contained outside the building, but there were thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to the property. As a business owner of over 10 years, he has learned a few things along the way… one of them being to have the best insurance possible! So although there was quite a bit of damage done, having his insurance policy in place gave him peace of mind as he dealt with the aftermath of this incident because he knew the expenses would be covered.
This experience reminded me of how important it is to be prepared, not only for earthly incidents, but even more importantly for eternity. While the fire at my friend’s business was an accident and completely unexpected, God has given us fair warning in His Word that Jesus will return. When Jesus comes back one day, we can’t say we didn’t know! However, even though we know this, some find it easy to ignore it and live as they please. Some choose to reject the gift of salvation altogether, while others accept the gift, but then neglect their spiritual growth making them “lukewarm” Christians (which we know is something that the Lord doesn’t’ tolerate!).
We don’t know the day or time that Jesus will return, but His return is imminent. His Salvation is the absolute best “insurance policy” there is for eternity. Let us be wise and get things in order today to be prepared to meet our Savior.
Suggested prayer: Heavenly Father, help me be sure of my salvation and serve you diligently as if You were coming back today. Please keep me from losing sight of eternity and live my life here on earth in a way that honors and glorifies you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
