Sometimes, when the night sky is clear, the full moon illuminates the landscape, making everything visible. However, no matter how bright the scene is, the moon does not emit light, but is a reflection of the sun. This example from nature illustrates a valuable spiritual lesson: we are able to do what does not seem possible in our own strength because we reflect the Son.

Loving others can fall into this category. Some people make this task difficult, making it a thorny challenge. But in today's passage, the Lord Jesus told His followers, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another" (verse 34).

The disciples may have thought that was impossible, but the commandment itself contains the answer to how we can obey it: Before we can love as the Lord does, we must first receive His love for us. Only then will we be able to be a reflection of Him to those around us and bring them to the One who cares for them more deeply and abundantly than they could ever imagine. The Lord empowers us to be "imitators of God, as beloved children." Only then will we be able to "walk in love, as Christ also loved us" (Ephesians 5:1-2). And when we do, we will accomplish something great and glorious, and we will be blessed.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Jesus, this day I want to thank you for loving me with unconditional love. I want to receive your love every day, so that I can be a reflection of you to those around me. Help me to reflect your love in every place I am and to engrave in my heart the new commandment you have left us. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus' name, Amen.
