The Power of Words

"The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction. Prudence is a fountain of life to the prudent, but folly brings punishment to fools. The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction. Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones."1

Our words help us to do many good things. We can use them to talk to our Heavenly Father. We can proclaim the truth of the Holy Scriptures and sing praises to Jesus Christ. We can love, encourage, counsel, and teach those around us. The list is very extensive.

However, our voices also have the power to do great harm. When such a problem occurs, it has often been triggered by something small, perhaps a criticism made in anger or an attack caused by envy.

Harsh words can feel good, even justified at times. But they are never what God desires because, in the end, they don't give life. They are not what we, as followers of Christ, are to offer (Matthew 22:36-40).

The Bible says that "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." (Luke 6:45). Therefore, although negative words and feelings may arise in us from time to time, it is important to pause and take note of them. Let's analyze what's really causing those harsh words and pray that the Lord will continue to soften our hearts and increase our capacity to be kind.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for today's passage. Personally, it spoke to my heart, because at times I have said harsh and offensive words when I have been angry. I ask you for forgiveness because in those moments I have not acted in a prudent way, but you have also taught me to recognize when I have made a mistake and to ask for forgiveness. Thank You, Lord, that You use every situation in my life to teach me and to mold my character according to Your will. I ask you to continue to soften my heart and increase my ability to be kind to others. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
