Rejoice always, pray
continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you
in Christ Jesus.1
Gratitude isn't
just saying "thank you." It is an attitude of the heart that recognizes
what God has done in our lives. It is not something we do once in a while, but
a lifestyle that reflects humility and dependence on God. The Bible tells
us, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in
Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Gratitude brings us
closer to God because it reminds us of all that He has done for us. It also
strengthens our relationships with people. Saying "thank you" not
only shows appreciation, but it forms an atmosphere of brotherly love.
Jesus taught us the
importance of forgiveness and gratitude in the parable of the servant who was
forgiven of a great debt (Matthew 18:23-35). This man was released from an
unpayable debt, but he showed no mercy to his fellow servant. How many times do
we act like this, forgetting what God has done for us?
Lack of gratitude
leads to pride and selfishness, but a grateful heart fills us with humility and
allows us to love and forgive others.
God designed
gratitude not only for our relationship with Him, but also for our physical and
emotional well-being. Gratitude can reduce stress and depression, studies have
shown that keeping a gratitude journal can decrease depressive symptoms by 30%.
It helps us focus on the good, changing our perspective even in difficult
times.
Nick Vujicic put it
this way, "I never met a bitter person who was thankful, or a thankful
person who was bitter.”
Grateful people tend
to sleep better, eat healthier, and take care of their bodies more often. A
grateful heart leads to a healthier body. Jesus said, "I have come that
they may have life, and have it abundantly." (John 10:10).
This Christmas
season, let us make the decision to live a life of constant gratitude,
remembering that the greatest gift was already given to us more than 2,000
years ago… Jesus Christ our Savior!
Suggested Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, today I want to thank you for the greatest gift I have
ever received in my entire life, Jesus my Savior. Help me to remember each day
that I have enough reasons to be thankful. May Your love constantly remind me
of all the blessings You have given me. Help me to make gratitude a lifestyle.
I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

5:16-18 (NIV).
