He went a little farther
and bowed with his face to the ground, praying “My Father! If it is possible,
let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be
done, not mine.”1
Jesus had predicted his
death more than once to his disciples and the time was nearing. After he ate
with his disciples during The Last Supper and before being arrested, he
went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray and ask God to have mercy and allow
this cup of suffering to be taken away from him because Jesus was scared, and
his soul was crushed with great sorrow to the point of death. However, he knew
that the decision was ultimately up to God, and if it was God’s will for Jesus
to die, then so be it. Jesus said, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
God could have prevented Jesus from being crucified, but he knew that this was
the only way for the world to be saved (John 3:16).
Jesus is the perfect
example of how we should think and act. In this sinful and evil world, we will
face challenges and suffering just as Jesus did, but we can have peace knowing
that by the blood of Jesus Christ we are saved and have eternal life. We don’t
have to be so scared and anxious that we take matters into our own hands
because nothing will ever get in the way of God’s will being done. Jesus
prayed three different times asking God for him not to have to suffer, but he
was also surrendering to God wanting to follow God’s directions either way. In
the same way, we can ask God for things, but at the same time surrender
ourselves to Him knowing that He has everything under control. So why worry
when God already has our problems figured out? He loves us unconditionally and
will work everything out for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
Suggested prayer: Lord, I come to you today asking
that you give me the same mindset that Christ had. Please help me through my
struggles and give me hope knowing that You are in control of everything that
has and ever will happen. I surrender myself to You because You love me
unconditionally and I love you. Thank you, Lord, for always understanding me
and comforting me in my times of need. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
