We know that our old
sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in
our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were
set free from the power of sin.1
Do you ever feel like you
are too far gone? Do you ever feel like it is too late to come back to Christ?
I know I do. Whenever I give into sin, I feel guilty because I know that it is
wrong and the opposite of what God wants from me. Even when the Holy Spirit
convicts me of what I am doing, I sometimes ignore it and follow through with
the sin. I want to pursue God more, just how He pursues me. However, it is hard
to give up my old sinful ways and live a God-pleasing life, and I worry that I
will not reach my full potential in Christ.
When I worry about this, I
remember that Romans 6:6 tells us that our old sinful selves were crucified
with Jesus so that we would no longer be overpowered by sin. Because of the
great love that God has for us, He sets us free from the power of sin and makes
us a new creation when we accept Jesus into our hearts. Moreover, in Romans
6:12, we are told to not let sin control the way we live and to not give in to
sinful desires. But how do we not give in to temptation and resist it
instead? Well, in Romans 6:13, we learn that we need to give ourselves to God
completely. We can give ourselves completely to God by trusting Him, allowing
His will to be done in our lives, and by praying honestly and earnestly. God
has already provided us with freedom from sin, we just need to accept that
freedom and use it wisely. If you have time and would like to dig deeper into
the Word, I encourage you to read all of Romans 6 today.
Suggested prayer: Dear
Lord, thank you for freeing me from the power of sin. Please help me to let go
of my old sinful ways, and move forward in this new life I have in Christ. In
your precious name I pray, Amen.
