Wait
for the Lord, be strong, and let your heart take courage. Wait for the Lord!1
The
Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday is known by some Bible
commentators as Silent Saturday. Jesus had tried to prepare His disciples for
the events this weekend would bring. They would witness His cruel death on the
cross on Friday and on Sunday, He would rise again! But what about Saturday?
Saturday would be a day of silence, waiting, and hoping! Although they believed the words of Jesus, the disciples still remained somewhat doubtful that Jesus would
indeed rise again and so all they had now was to wait and see. The disciples
could have drawn strength from David in Psalm 27:13 -14 when he said, I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the
living! Wait for the Lord, be strong, and let your heart take courage. Wait for
the Lord!
In
1977, little orphan Annie lived hopeful that her parents would return for her
one day. She did not allow sadness to claim her while she waited either! She had
hope for tomorrow as she sang:
The sun will come out tomorrow! Bet
your bottom dollar that tomorrow there will be sun!
Just thinking about tomorrow, clears
away the cobwebs and the sorrow until there is none!
When I am stuck with a day that is grey
and lonely, I just stick out my chin and grin and say:
Oh! The sun will come out tomorrow….2
The
disciples, and even us today, could use a bit of the hope Annie had, for as sure as
the sun rose on Sunday, so did the Sonâ€"Jesus! Silent Saturday was a day meant
to teach us stillness and to wait on the Lord. If there are problems
weighing down on you today, if the night seems long and morning never seems to
dawn, take heartâ€"the sun will come out tomorrow and the Son will be there
waiting to receive you with open arms!
Suggested
prayer: Lord, thank you for moments of pause and waiting when I can reflect on
all the times you have been my strength. Instill in me the desire to seek you
more earnestly. Thank you for being the One to chase away my sorrows. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
