But you are
not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy
nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the
goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful
light.1
My friend got
back from church camp a few days ago. I asked her what was something she
learned that has been helping her and she said that the story about the woman
at the well, found in John 4:1-26, has helped because despite the difficult past this woman had and her reputation, Jesus still chose her to share that He is the Messiah. In the
Bible, God chose many to grow His kingdom, not caring about their past or who
they were. God chose Saul, whose name was changed to Paul, who persecuted
Christians before his encounter with the Lord. God chose David to be king of
Israel despite his age and size. He chose Rahab, a Gentile prostitute. He chose
Moses in spite of his stutter. From all these examples, we see that God can use
anyone for His glory.
There are so
many times when we feel too far gone for God to want to use us or like our
testimony is not great enough to grow His kingdom. However, we all have a good
purpose that God planned long ago (Ephesians 2:10). He chooses us even before we
choose Him. Whatever darkness you have been living in, God calls you out of it
into His light because you are chosen (1 Peter 2:9).
Suggested
prayer: God, thank you for choosing me even when I hesitate to choose you. When
I feel overlooked or too far gone, remind me of your great love and purpose for
me. Please help me to step out of darkness and come into your light. In the
name of Jesus I pray, amen.
