Recognizing Our Vulnerability

If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1

If we see a fellow believer fall into sin, it can be tempting to judge him. But we often forget that we, too, can easily stumble. Although believers have a righteous standing before God, we must recognize, like Paul, our inner problem: the sin that dwells in us (Romans 7:20).

Christians must always be vigilant. Ignorance about the nature of sin, the strategies of our enemy, and our own weaknesses make us more vulnerable to falling, so we cannot neglect our thoughts. Every time we find ourselves excusing, redefining, or rationalizing sin, it is because we have ceased to be sensitive to God.

If you have turned away from the Lord, return to Him by acknowledging your sin and taking responsibility for it. Repentance means changing your mind and taking a different course, toward God, instead of turning away from Him.

The next step is more difficult: reacting with gratitude for His correction. Every time we fall into sin, our Father works in love to bring us back into fellowship with Him. His discipline can be painful, but it is always good because it brings us back to our senses and reconnects us with God.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You have bestowed Your mercy upon me when I have needed it most. Lord, instead of judging when others fall into sin, help me to bestow mercy. Help me to give grace like the grace that has been given to me. Thank You, Lord, for Your correction, because although it may be painful, it helps us reconnect with You. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
