So I say,
walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the
flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary
to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do
whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery, idolatry and witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,
dissensions, factions and envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you,
as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of
God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Against such things there
is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its
passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the
Spirit. 1
The Holy Spirit
is one of the most precious gifts God has given us. The Spirit comes to dwell
in believers at the time of salvation and enables them to overcome sin and live
to the glory of God (John 15:26-27). However, the power of the Holy Spirit can be
hindered or ignored.
Walking in the
Spirit implies trust in Him. He guides us, and we follow Him. When He speaks,
we listen to Him, heed His warnings, and obey His instructions. His path is a
path of surrender that, while difficult at times, leads to the fullness of
life. The Holy Spirit not only guides us but also empowers us, giving us all
that we need to live righteously and bear fruit (Galatians 5:22-23).
Being led by
the Holy Spirit should be the natural lifestyle of the children of God. We
should seek to maintain an awareness of His presence always. As we do, He makes
us sensitive to the things of God and gives us understanding of the situations
and people around us.
Take a walk
with the Holy Spirit today. Learn to recognize His voice by spending time in the
Word and in prayer. Focus your thoughts on Him, asking Him for His guidance and
waiting for His direction.
Suggested
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that we are not alone. As Your children
we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. Let me be aware of the presence of the
Holy Spirit in my life and be guided, empowered, and bear fruit. May it all be
to give You honor and glory. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
