Overcoming Failure

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I
myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in
me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot
carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do\'€”this I
keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is
sin living in me that does it. 1

Victory is God's will for the believer's life. However, sometimes we repeatedly fall into
the same sin. If we want to do the right thing, why don't we succeed?

One reason is incomplete repentance. We may experience sorrow and shame for sin
without being repentant. Repentance is not a matter of weeping or feeling guilty, rather it
is a change of mindset about sin, so that we no longer cling to our perspective, but
agree with what God says. In doing so, the heart turns in the opposite direction rather
than persistence in sin (Proverbs 28:13).

The second reason for failure is an inadequate view of our identity in Christ. As children
of God, we have God living in us. When we understand this truth, we will recognize that
sin does not fit with who we are and we will stop justifying our faults. Our genuine
repentance is based on a sincere, biblical understanding of our identity.

When we put these two truths together, we create a powerful tool against temptation.
Our Father wants us to be victorious, and we triumph when we remember that Christ is
the source of life in us.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that in You we have victory over
failure. Help me recognize any sin hidden in my heart. I ask you to please search my life
and help me remember my identity in You and live as your child. In Jesus' name, Amen.
